💛 Bre Black’s Story
Cabin 8 | September 19–21, 2025 | Sure Game Wilderness Resort

My name is Bre Black, and I’m a 33-year-old single mom to an amazing, smart, funny, and kind 12-year-old daughter. I grew up here in Minnesota loving everything about the lake and camping lifestyle, but in recent years, those simple joys have taken a back seat as our family has faced some enormous challenges.

I am the 5th generation in my family to be diagnosed with breast cancer at a young age. We carry the BRCA1 gene mutation, known as the “breast cancer gene,” which can increase a person’s risk by as much as 85–90% and also leads to other cancers in both men and women. We didn’t know about this mutation until after I had my daughter.

I was diagnosed with a rare, aggressive, advanced Triple Negative Breast Cancer — Stage 3, Grade 3, with necrosis. I spent six months driving over 3 hours each way every week to receive multiple rounds of chemotherapy. After that, I underwent a double mastectomy, oophorectomy, hysterectomy, and more. Almost immediately, I began driving 2 hours each way for daily radiation treatments, all while continuing infusion treatments — which I still receive today.

Before cancer, I was also diagnosed with Pseudo Tumor Cerebri in 2017, a rare brain disease that causes pain, traumatic brain injury, blindness, and spinal degeneration. I’ve undergone numerous brain surgeries, procedures, and therapies at Mayo Clinic, where I still participate in a research program.

My journey isn’t over. I still have more infusions and many chest surgeries ahead. But through it all, I remain deeply grateful. I have an incredible support system — my family, friends, and community — who have shown me that we’re never truly alone, that it’s okay to ask for help, and that even the hardest battles are worth fighting when you’re surrounded by the right people.

This September, my daughter and I stayed in Cabin 8 for a “Cancer Sucks” getaway weekend — and it was everything we needed. We had an amazing weekend thanks to Sure Game Wilderness Resort. The cabins and property were beautiful, cozy, and full of activities, both indoors and outdoors. We even made special memories like my daughter winning a souvenir from the claw machine!

“Opportunities like this mean so much for families like ours. Their generosity and kindness gave us time to relax, breathe, and enjoy the Minnesota we love. If you’re looking for a special place to visit, I highly recommend SGW Resort — we will definitely be back. Support those who lift up others, and treat yourself to an incredible getaway.” ❤️
