💛 Laura Toledo’s Story
Cabin 2 | October 24–26, 2025 | Sure Game Wilderness Resort
I was diagnosed with an aggressive form of stage 3 breast cancer in 2021. The first part of treatment was quick—chemo, surgery, and radiation—followed by two years of what’s considered “not active” treatment. Luckily, I’ve been cancer-free since 2022, but I’ll never be free from the lasting effects cancer leaves behind.
Between medical appointments, working two jobs, and being a single parent to two kids, it’s hard to find time—or money—to travel. My kids and I love road trips because they let us step away from real life for a moment. Those adventures have become some of our most meaningful memories in this post-cancer life.
That’s why I apply for travel opportunities for cancer survivors. Many of us are buried in medical debt or have lost income along the way, and even if we happen to have a little extra, we rarely spend it on ourselves. Opportunities like this allow us to simply breathe, reconnect, and feel normal again—even just for a weekend.

I’m incredibly grateful to Sure Game Wilderness Resort for the opportunity to stay in one of their cabins at the end of October. Northern Minnesota is beautiful this time of year, but nothing prepared us for the beauty of the sunset over Clear Lake. The cabin was just what we needed to relax in between jaunts around the area (we loved the Lost 40). The beds were soft, the blankets were plentiful for the cold nights, and my kids discovered their new favorite movie (Ice Age: Collision Course—officially in rotation now!).
It was a much-needed reset for the kids and me (and our two dogs!). I can’t thank Alicia and her family enough for such a generous gift—not just the accommodations, but for the lifelong memories we made together.
